President’s Message

Welcome to the website of The Linguistic Society of Hong Kong (LSHK).

Since its establishment in 1986, LSHK has been dedicated to advancing the development and promotion of linguistics in Hong Kong. We play a crucial role in supporting linguistic research and teaching across the region. Our Executive Committee consists of linguists from various local universities, including both UGC-funded and self-financed tertiary institutions.

To foster research exchanges among our members, LSHK organizes several key events throughout the year. These include the Annual Research Forum (ARF), the Workshop on Cantonese (WOC), as well as sponsoring the Forum on Cantonese Linguistics (FoCaL) and the International Conference on Yue Dialects. These events, often organized in collaboration with local universities, provide valuable platforms for scholars to share their insights and findings.

In our commitment to supporting the next generation of researchers, LSHK has established several awards and subsidies. These include the Outstanding Theses Award, the Fieldwork Subsidy, and the Outstanding Student Paper on Cantonese Linguistics (in conjunction with the International Conference on Yue Dialects). We take pride in encouraging and recognizing outstanding research work by students and young scholars.

Additionally, LSHK has formed various work groups to address specific linguistic and sociolinguistic issues in Hong Kong. Our workgroups cover a range of topics, including the Bilingual Glossary, Language Policy, the Jyutping Scheme, and the Jyutjyusi (Cantonese test). These initiatives reflect our commitment to actively engage with and contribute to the linguistic landscape of Hong Kong.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all our members, past and present, for their unwavering support in various capacities. We value your input and encourage you to share your ideas and suggestions on how we can further enhance our services to the linguistic community in Hong Kong and beyond. We look forward to your active participation in LSHK’s endeavors.
